In Minnesota, we feel our winters never end but when they do, we seem to jump into the heat and humidity of summer…and are extremely upset when we turn on the AC and feel a blast of warm air streaming from the vents.

Are you aware that without regular maintenance an air conditioner loses about 5% of its original efficiency per year? It won’t take many years before your air conditioning unit may be performing as poorly as other models that are years older! With proper service, the lost efficiency can be restored.

If your car air conditioning isn’t blowing as cool as it used to, or takes longer to cool off your car, you may need to have your system serviced. It is possible that your air conditioning system has a leak (refrigerant will evaporate after leaving the system) or one of its components have failed.

Sometimes the remedy for a poor performing automobile air conditioning system is a recharge of refrigerant (formerly known as Freon). Refrigerant is the life blood of your car’s AC and should be checked to make sure pressure levels are within manufacturer’s specifications. While the refrigerant in your car’s AC system operates in a closed system, leaks do occur from time to time when seals weaken due to normal wear and tear.

Medi-CAR Auto Repair uses special air conditioning equipment that removes old refrigerant and adds fresh refrigerant. It’s actually kind of like a dialysis machine for your car. Old refrigerant is dried and reused later after it runs through a process inside our AC recycler – but not on the same vehicle.

The majority of the time if you air conditioning isn’t effective, it is due to a failure of the following components:

Compressor: The compressor is considered the core of your AC system. It is powered by a drive belt connected to your engine and pumps refrigerant vapor under high pressure to the condenser.

Condenser: The condenser changes the high-pressure refrigerant vapor to a liquid and then dissipates the resulting heat.

Receiver/Drier: The now liquid refrigerant moves to the receiver-dryer which removes any moisture that may have leaked into the refrigerant. Moisture in the system causes havoc, with ice crystals causing blockages and mechanical damage.

Expansion Valve/Orifice Tube: The pressurized refrigerant flows from the receiver-drier to the expansion valve. The valve removes pressure from the liquid so that it can expand and become refrigerant vapor in the evaporator.

Evaporator: The evaporator has tubes and fins similar to a car radiator and when the refrigerant is vaporized it absorbs heat from the air in the passenger compartment. The blower fan inside the passenger compartment pushes air over the outside of the evaporator, so cold air is circulated inside the car. On the ‘air-side’ of the evaporator, the moisture in the air is reduced, and the ‘condensate’ is collected and drained away.
