Engine Tune Up & Diagnostics – Rosemount, MN

The term “tune-up” is more of an old fashioned term that may be a misnomer today. With electronic ignition and fuel injection came computers that now control the engine settings-and require sophisticated equipment and training to monitor and repair.

Further, in the “old days” tune-ups were often required by 25,000 miles and the car life expectancy was thought to be 100,000 miles. This is no longer true. Many manufacturers don’t even recommend the first tune-up until the vehicle reaches 100,000 miles. It is no longer unusual to see vehicles performing well 200,000 to 350,000 miles (or even more!)

The key to a vehicle’s longevity is regular maintenance (and surprisingly, a lot of highway driving!)

With that said, a few of the ignition parts do need to be replaced per the vehicle maintenance schedule including:

Spark plugs force electricity to arc across a gap, like a bolt of lightning and this spark ignites the mixture of fuel and air which forces the cylinder piston down (the motion of the piston creates power).

Spark plugs wear out over time. As they get older, they may not spark properly. This affects your engine’s performance and results in a loss of power.

Spark Plug Wires/Ignition Coil Boots transport the electricity from the ignition system to the spark plugs. These are suggested to be replaced at the same time as the plugs-even if they look visually fine. Internal damage to the wires can cause increased resistance which in turn causes a weak spark. Worse case this increased resistance can damage your ignition coil(s).

The timing for a “tune-up” for many vehicles is around 100,000 miles when manufacturers recommend replacement of spark plugs and wires and other maintenance items including:

• Fuel and Air Filter (the latter should be replaced more frequently based on inspection)
• Drive Belts
• Fluid flushes

Emissions Equipment can be the cause of some drive-ability issues and gas mileage concerns.

  • Catalytic Converter
  • Fuel Purge Solenoids and Valves
